CS Hon. FCPA John Mbadi this morning hosted a productive engagement with the Interreligious Council of Kenya (IRCK) to deliberate on critical economic and social issues affecting Kenyans. Present were PS for Economic Planning, Mr. James Muhati.
Dr. FS Abdala (SAAJ Representative); Rev. Kepha Nyandega (EAK); Linus Kigai (Acting Executive Director, IRCK); and Rose Njoka (OAC, Kenya Chapter).
The CS emphasized the government's commitment to transparency and collaboration, acknowledging previous perceptions of limited openness at the National Treasury. He highlighted the importance of engaging with the religious community, given their critical role in shaping societal values and holding the government accountable.
“The government recognizes the challenges facing the economy, including a significant budget deficit. While measures like tax amendments passed in December have eased the tax burden on Kenyans, more work remains to ensure taxes translate into tangible benefits for citizens,” said the CS. He also underscored ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, stabilize fuel prices, and address the public wage bill.
The IRCK commended the CS for convening the meeting and acknowledged the progress made in economic management, including the stabilization of the dollar and interest rates. However, they expressed concerns about struggling parastatals, such as the Kenya Police Service, and proposed leveraging their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) resources to address these challenges.
The Council also called for a forensic audit of public debt, greater transparency on debt usage, and increased engagement with the business community to foster mutual understanding and support. In response, the CS reassured them that a forensic audit of public debt is ongoing and will be made public. He noted that restructuring of state organs is at an advanced stage, with plans to dissolve or reorganize some parastatals to enhance service delivery.
The CS reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusivity and open dialogue as it works to improve the welfare of all Kenyans. He promised that further discussions would be held to address pressing economic issues.
